Building Redevelopment

Opening Up:

We want to make it easier for people in our community to come into our buildings. The new entrance will enable step-free access both into and within our buildings. Levelling and raising the floor of the main church auditorium to the same level as the church halls will mean that one ramp from the new entrance will make the whole of the ground floor accessible for all.

Welcoming In:

We have been given a welcome by God into his kingdom. We want to offer a warm welcome to all those who come into our buildings – whether on a Sunday or midweek. A light, large, open foyer area will make that possible and will also deal with our longstanding lack of disabled access from the church to the halls.

Looking Ahead:

We have a responsibility to steward our buildings well. What will we pass on to the next generation? We want to help them to be a witness here in Cheam. We want them to be able to invest in mission in new ways, because they have a premises which is fit for purpose in 2050 and beyond.

Give to the Building Project:

 

We praise God that in answer to our prayers, we have the permissions, the funds and a start date for Phase 1 of our Building project.

Work will commence onsite on Monday 21st September 2026

The hope is that that build will take 26 weeks and will be done just before Easter weekend next year (Easter Sunday is 28th March 2027)

Ongoing giving

We thank God for all that he has provided so far. We are still raising funds for the next phase of the building project. If you would like to give towards the project, details are included in our weekly e-bulletin.  You can also speak to David or Liz Bentley, who will be happy to answer any questions.

Temporary changes to how we enter the church and move around our buildings

Step-free access to the church

The Park Road step-free entrance is going to be boarded up.
So please enter through the pre-school alleyway in Malden Road if you need step-free access on a Sunday morning.

The pavement alongside the church in Park Road will be closed.
If you need a level route from the Library Car Park to the church, you might find it easier to walk around via the Library and Church Road.

Parents with prams and buggies

For safety and access, please do not leave prams or buggies in the vestry corridor or the pre-school lobby on Sundays.
If you are happy to leave them outside, they can be left against the pre-school wall, to the left of the pre-school entrance.
Alternatively, please use the church halls car park entrance and leave them in the alcoves along the church halls corridor, taking care not to block the corridor.
If you need any help, please ask a member of our Welcome Team.
We realise these arrangements may not be ideal.  We will keep them under review.  Thank you for your understanding and consideration while the building work is underway.
 

Out of hours access

The white door alongside the Park Road entrance (used by some teams and individuals who need access to the church buildings outside normal office and church service hours) will be boarded up as part of the construction work.
An alternative out of hours access arrangement has been provided, and the church office will inform relevant team leaders and individuals as needed.  For security reasons, we are not sharing these details more widely.  If you think you need out-of-hours access, please contact the church office.
During office hours or church hall events, please continue to use the bell or intercom on the car park door to gain access.
 

Access inside our buildings

The corridor between the church and church halls on the Park Road side of the building will be closed and boarded off.
The vestry corridor on the pre-school side of the building will be the only direct internal route between the church and church halls.
The double doors between the bookstall lobby and the Main Hall will be blocked by hoarding.  To access the Main Hall, please use the alternative doors along the church halls corridor.
The bottom of the stairs in the bookstall lobby will also be blocked by hoarding. Temporary stairs and a landing will be installed so that the stairs can continue to be used.
A construction site office will be built in the corner of the Main Hall, alongside the former store.  This will reduce the amount of floor space available in the Main Hall.
 

Security and safeguarding considerations

The entire area where the building contractors will be working, including their site office in the Main Hall, will be self-contained and separate from our church activities.
The builders will have their own dedicated access and facilities, including toilets.
There will be no access between the church or church halls and the construction site, except for one exit door which would only be used by the builders to leave through the church halls in an emergency.

As the work progresses, the information provided here, and the arrangements for accessing and moving around our buildings, will change.
We will do our best to keep you up to date, but things may not always be as you expect.
